The Sūcanā-pañcāśikā (सूचनापञ्चाशिका : संवादनियमावली) codifies the entirety of Shannon’s information theory into fifty metered Sanskrit verses in the classical Anuṣṭubh meter. Every verse adheres strictly to the grammatical canons of Pāṇini and the prosodic rules of Piṅgala, bridging classical Indian epistemology (Pramāṇa-Śāstra) with the foundational mathematical equations of modern telecommunications.

If you already know tomorrow’s sunrise with 100% certainty, receiving a message stating ‘the sun rose’ conveys exactly zero information. Information exists only when uncertainty is resolved.

Shannon explicitly decoupled engineering communication from semantic meaning: ‘The fundamental problem of communication is that of reproducing at one point either exactly or approximately a message selected at another point. Frequently the messages have meaning; that is they refer to or are correlated according to some system with certain physical or conceptual entities. These semantic aspects of communication are irrelevant to the engineering problem.’

Surprise Value: the information content of an event $x$ with probability $p(x)$ is $I(x) = \log_2 rac{1}{p(x)} = -\log_2 p(x)$. If an event has $p = 1$, $-\log_2(1) = 0$ bits. If an event has $p = rac{1}{1024}$, it carries $-\log_2(1/1024) = 10$ bits of surprise.

Canto 2: Information Entropy Formula

Canto 2 derives the mathematical formula for Shannon Entropy: $H(X) = -\sum_{i=1}^n p(x_i) \log_2 p(x_i)$. Shannon proved that this is the unique mathematical function satisfying the requirements of continuity, monotonicity and additivity. It reaches its maximum for a uniform probability distribution and collapses to zero when an outcome is certain.
